Building a Stronger Economic Future for Kentish

Published 23rd July 2026
Kentish Council is inviting residents, businesses and community organisations to help shape the municipality's economic future, following Council's endorsement of the draft Kentish Economic Development Strategy 2026-2030 for public consultation.

The draft Strategy sets out a five-year roadmap to strengthen the local economy, support business growth, create employment opportunities and build on the unique strengths that make Kentish one of Tasmania's most distinctive places to live, work, invest and visit.

Mayor Kate Haberle said the Strategy recognised Kentish's unique identity, productive agricultural sector, world-renowned tourism assets and strong community spirit.

"Kentish has enormous potential. From our productive farming sector and thriving small businesses to iconic destinations such as Cradle Mountain and Sheffield's internationally recognised murals, we have a strong foundation to build on."

"This Strategy is about ensuring we continue creating opportunities for local businesses, attracting investment, supporting jobs and making Kentish an even better place to live."

The draft Strategy focuses on five key priorities:

  • Securing infrastructure that supports growth and investment;
  • Strengthening local businesses and agriculture;
  • Improving liveability to attract and retain residents and workers;
  • Growing tourism and celebrating Kentish's unique identity; and
  • Building strong partnerships to deliver long-term economic outcomes.

The Strategy also recognises opportunities to work collaboratively across North West Tasmania while maintaining initiatives tailored specifically to Kentish's rural communities and local economy.

Importantly, the Strategy identifies practical actions to support priorities such as improved transport and digital connectivity, advocacy for infrastructure investment, business capability programs, agritourism, destination marketing and stronger partnerships with industry and government.

Mayor Haberle encourages the community to review the draft and provide feedback.

"This Strategy belongs to the whole community. Before it is finalised, we want to hear from residents, business owners, farmers, community groups and anyone with an interest in Kentish's future."

Public consultation will remain open until 24 August, with written submissions accepted at council@kentish.tas.gov.au or at the Kentish Council office, 69 High Street, Sheffield.  All ideas will be considered before the final Strategy is presented to Council for adoption later this year.

The draft Strategy is available to view online here, or alternatively provided in a hard copy from the council office.
