Position Information

Are you passionate about mountain biking, enjoy being outdoors and keen to develop practical skills while starting a career in local government?

Kentish and Latrobe Councils are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our team as a Trainee Mountain Bike Trails Maintenance Officer. This is a shared position between the two Councils, providing a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience, learn from experienced staff and contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the Wild Mersey mountain bike trail network across both municipalities.

This traineeship is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to kick-start their career in local government, outdoor maintenance or landscaping, while working towards a nationally recognised Certificate III in Landscape Construction. No previous experience in trail maintenance is necessary, just a willingness to learn, a positive attitude and an interest in working outdoors.

Under the guidance and supervision of experienced team members, you will assist with a range of practical maintenance and improvement activities across Council’s mountain bike trails and associated infrastructure. Tasks will include, but are not limited to, vegetation trimming, trail repairs and grooming, signage maintenance, weed management, drainage works, assisting with trail construction and improvements. You will also participate in workplace training, develop your practical skills and contribute to ensuring Council’s trails remain safe, accessible and enjoyable for the community and visitors.

About Us

The Latrobe and Kentish Councils are located adjacent to each other in the North-West of Tasmania and cover an area from the coastal beaches of Port Sorell to the highland regions of Mount Roland and Cradle Mountain.

Latrobe and Kentish Councils value collaboration and partnerships both within and outside their municipalities. As part of their business model, the Councils have entered into a resource-sharing arrangement. This allows both Councils to deliver services and outcomes for their respective communities to gain benefits that may have been otherwise unattainable.

Since the inception of the resource sharing arrangements in 2010, the number of resources shared has steadily grown and the two Councils now operate as one organisation with each Council retaining their respective elected representatives.
